Professional Development

Guided Reading (GR)

Guided Reading (GR) is an instructional approach/strategy used in the classroom to provide students with reading instruction at their instructional level and in a small group. The success of Guided Reading is based on data. Our team trains teachers to incorporate GR in their reading instruction for success using center based activities. We take you through these simple step.

  1. Test administration for instructional level
  2. Strategic Grouping
  3. Progress monitoring
  4. Teaching and instilling in students Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOT) through probing and questioning.
  5. Strategies to support ELLs.

ESL Collaboration Tool

As DESE seeks to provide ELs with systematic, explicit, and sustained language instruction to prepare them for general education by focusing on academic language. It is imperative that ESL teachers and content area teachers collaborate. Through this kind of collaborations, teachers will be able to come up with appropriate goals and relevant opportunities for all students no matter their level to explore language and be able to articulate them in all content areas. The Collaborative Tool comes in. guides teachers to create achievable and relevant Focused Language Goals (FLGs) and plan appropriately. The tool brings together the WIDA standards, content standards, language functions, key academic practices, and performance definitions together in one place to help teachers work smarter and more effectively.

SEI Smart Card

The LEAP training seeks to provide all students, especially the most vulnerable students (low-income, ELs, students of color, and students with disabilities) with access to high-quality educational opportunities and experiences with high academic expectations to ensure greater equity in outcomes. This training seeks to

  1. improve understanding of and teaching with poverty, race and culture in mind,
  2. improve resources for educators and student support teams,
  3. improve services and placements for high mobility students,
  4. decrease inappropriate eligibility determinations for special education &
  5. increase identification of special education placements in the least restrictive environment.

Explicit ESL Instruction Using the Push-in Model

SEI Smart Card

In this hands-on Professional Development (PD), participants explore the SEI Smart Card; an observational guide for leaders from DESE for walkthroughs and observation.  We have split the front page of the Card into a 5-part document, which allows school leaders a gradual release as they implement this tool.

Professional Book Studies

Explicit ESL Instruction Using the Push-in Model

Explicit ESL Instruction Using the Push-in Model

We offer professional book studies on books like "Read, Write, Lead" by Regie Routman; "Turning High Poverty Schools into High-Performing School" by Parrett & Budge; "Teaching with Poverty in Mind" & "Engaging Students with Poverty in Mind" by Eric Jensen and more. Not only do study, we also guide your teachers to implement the strategies and ideas presented in these books into their classroom to ensure sustained growth and success.

Student-Teacher Interactions

ESL instruction in MA is a systematic, explicit and sustained language instruction which, prepares students for general education by focusing on academic language while attending to social instructional language.  How does an ESL teacher prepare their student to transition successfully to the mainstream classroom? In this PD, teachers will learn how to corporately work to promote and accelerate academic achievement for all ELs.
